Melaleucas Australian Paper Barks and Honey Myrtles The vast majority of Melaleucas can be found growing naturally throughout the woodlands and shrub lands of Australia. The largest members of this genus are commonly referred to as Paper Barks while the smaller growing species are generally referred to as Honey Myrtles. Tea Tree Oil, a popular cosmetic additive used for its medicinal properties, is a derivative of Melaleuca alternifolia. Melaleucas are also recognized for their distinctive branching structures, paper-like bark, and nectar-rich flowers. Most Melaleucas are easy to grow and maintain and do exceptionally well in Southern California. Melaleucas make excellent alternative choices for screen plantings, specimen plantings, as well as small mass plantings.
